Hi, Jon Harnum here. Thanks for visiting.
Proud Alaskan, multi-instrumentalist, and author of eight music-related books, I've got over 30 years of playing and 20 years of teaching experience, including a Ph. D. in music education from Northwestern University, one of the premier schools of music, worldwide. I play trumpet, guitar, and percussion and have been known to sing a song or two. I also write and teach and give semi-regular talks and workshops. I have a growing collection of instruments from around the world that I play for fun and wouldn't dream of playing in public. Trumpet and guitar are my main instruments, as well as piano and all beginning band instruments. To learn more about my lessons and find availabile times (2-6 Tue-Thurs), go here. I also provide several one-off talks, workshops, and series of workshops on musical topics like practice and improvisation, but also workshops and talks on self-publishing. One unique strength as a teacher is my expert knowledge of practice, the subject of my Ph. D. research, and the topic of two of my books. I'm super proud ofThe Practice of Practice, published in hardcover, thanks to 154 awesome KICKSTARTER backers. Lately I've been getting my books into other languages, like Spanish, Italian, and Chinese, with editions in Portuguese and Hindi in the works. Since 2001, I've given away well over a million copies of my books for free to students all over the world. Want one? Sign up to be notified of the next give-away.
